Scoping. A short paid discovery, usually one to two weeks. It ends with a written scope, an architecture, the third-party services the build depends on and their running costs, and a build sequence. You own that document whether or not the build goes ahead.
Build. Work goes out in two-week increments, each one deployed somewhere you can open. Nothing is reported as done on a status call before it is running.
Launch. Store submissions, domains, payment providers, analytics and error reporting are set up under your accounts, not ours, so you keep them if you later move the work elsewhere.
Run. After launch the choice is a monthly maintenance arrangement or a clean handover with the repository, the deployment pipeline and a written runbook. Both are offered; neither is a condition of the build.
Founders taking a first product to market who need one team for the app, the API and the infrastructure rather than three suppliers pointing at each other. Small companies with an existing system that has outgrown the person who wrote it. Businesses that need an integration built against someone else's API and want the person writing it to have read the specification rather than guessed at it.
